Your First Spool: A Beginner’s Guide to 3D Printer Filament

Your first spool should help you get comfortable with your printer. Before choosing a colour, check what your machine accepts and think about one small project you would like to make. A desk organiser or simple display model is a good place to start.

Check the fit before you buy

Filament is for FDM/FFF printers, which melt plastic from a spool. Resin printers use a different process. Check your printer’s manual for the required filament diameter: 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm are different sizes, not interchangeable options. The nozzle size is a separate measurement.

Also check the spool dimensions, holder clearance and any automatic feeder’s compatibility requirements. A spool fitting on the holder does not automatically mean every material is suitable for the printer.

Choose a material for your first project

PLA is a useful starting point for indoor decorative pieces, models and prototypes. It is generally straightforward to print, but it is not the right choice for every hot or demanding environment. Keep the first spool simple

Pick one material and one colour you will enjoy using. A single-colour option makes it easier to compare test prints. For example, Hotend PLA Matte Black is listed as 1.75 mm filament in a 1 kg spool. Read the individual product’s specifications before ordering rather than assuming every finish has the same requirements.

Your first-print checklist

  • Select your exact printer, installed nozzle size and material in the slicer.
  • Use a compatible starting profile and the filament supplier’s guidance.
  • Prepare the build plate according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Load the filament using your printer’s loading procedure.
  • Choose a small model and preview its layers, supports, time and material estimate.
  • Watch the first layer and stop if the print detaches or material builds up around the nozzle.
